National DNA Database Annual Report 2002-03

The public can judge for itself the success of The National DNA Database® with the launch of its first ever annual report.

Packed full of detailed information from the legislation and how it is operated to statistics and funding, the publication shows how the Database makes a major contribution to the detection and prevention of crime.

The National DNA Database was set up in 1995 by the Association of Chief Police Officers in partnership with The Forensic Science Service® (FSS®) with government funding and has now become a world class crime intelligence tool.

David Coleman, Chief Constable of Derbyshire and Chairman of the National DNA Database Board said:

“This is a milestone in the history of the National DNA Database. DNA has been recognised throughout the world as one of the most effective tools in the fight against crime.

“This report demonstrates that in this country we are at the leading edge of this technology and I am proud to be part of the partnership between the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Forensic Science Service and the Home Office, which has seen the creation and development of such a successful and reliable element of the criminal justice system”.

FSS Chief Scientist Dr Bob Bramley, who acts as the Database Custodian said:

“It’s important that the work of the National DNA Database is as open and transparent as possible so that the general public are aware of how it works and can be reassured that it operates under strict guidelines.

“The impact of the Database has been huge. It is the biggest contribution forensic science has made to the detection of crimes, and it is such a powerful tool as it can eliminate the innocent as well as identify the guilty.”
